The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, EDSIEC, on Monday, presented Certificates of Return to councillorship candidates who emerged victorious in the by-elections conducted on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
The certificates were handed over at the Commission’s headquarters on Airport Road, GRA, Benin City, by Ovuchor Suleiman, representing EDSIEC Chairman Jonathan Aifuobhokhan.
While several candidates turned up to personally receive their certificates, others were notably absent and did not collect theirs at the ceremony.
Monday’s presentation officially concludes the highly contentious by-election, which went ahead despite a subsisting High Court ex parte order directing EDSIEC to suspend the exercise.
The Commission, however, had earlier filed a motion on notice challenging the order and announced in a September 19 press release that it would proceed with the polls based on its legal position.
The elections, boycotted by major opposition parties, saw the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the only contender. The party consequently secured all 59 councillorship seats across 15 local government areas where vacancies existed.
