Edward Norton Did A Lot More Than Act For American History X

There is a lot to love about Star Wars, with its worlds of unique characters, intricate plot lines, and large scale adventures. Disney+’s newest Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, provided us with an in-depth look into Obi-Wan’s life after Order 66. Unfortunately, as he attempts to blend into the desert and move past his relationship with Anakin Skywalker, trouble still seems to find him. Obi-Wan is a compelling character because of his intellect, compassion, and physical strength, but he’s also a master of the lightsaber in many fight scenes.

When the show announced that the excellent Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen would come back for the show, fans quickly became excited at the prospect of another lightsaber dual between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. Luckily, this series didn’t disappoint as far as lightsabers were concerned, and we now have many more lightsaber battles to add to our watch lists. Here are the six best lightsaber duals in Obi-Wan Kenobi, ranked.

6 Third Sister Vs. Grand Inquisitor (Episode 2)

This scene is less of a lightsaber battle and more of a shocking lightsaber moment. Reva chases Obi-Wan around the storage bay until The Grand Inquisitor comes and attempts to steal her prey and victory. Tension builds between the Third Sister and The Grand Inquisitor throughout this whole episode, and the quick end of their rivalry comes as a bold surprise to viewers. While some liked this unexpected plot point, many hardcore Star Wars fans questioned its believability within the larger franchise.

Perhaps more important than the actual fighting are the psychological games Reva plays (though this is another point of disagreement among fans). As Reva approaches Obi-Wan, she reveals pieces of information that throw Kenobi off-balance. For the first time, we see the Third’s Sister’s cunning and plotting rather than her rash impatience. Even though this lightsaber scene is short-lived, we should also note that some of the series’ coolest cinematography takes place in this scene where Reva’s lightsaber is perfectly framed around storage bins.

5 Ben and Beru Lars Vs. Third Sister (Episode 6)

We love this battle more for what it represents than for the choreography itself. Owen and Beru Lars, simple moisture farmers with no formal combat training (that we know of) put their lives on the line for Luke. While some may say it’s a little unrealistic that a moisture farmer could hold his own against a trained Inquisitor, Owen’s preparation and determined heart seem to balance the scales here. The Lars family’s weak physicality but strong moral conviction contrasts perfectly with Reva’s brute strength and uncertainty in this scene making it one of the most interesting and emotionally charged moments of the show.

4 Darth Vader Vs. Obi-Wan (Episode 3)

The moments leading up to this fight are some of the most intense in the series. Vader combs the streets for Kenobi, and makes no attempt to hide his power or his anger. Without even breaking a sweat, he brings the city to its knees and successfully draws out his greatest enemy. When Obi-Wan comes out to fight, he has yet to fully re-establish his connection with the force. While Obi-Wan starts to crumble under the physical and psychological toll of his most tragic life-experiences, Vader has no problem beating the Jedi down and dragging Kenobi through fire. Even though this scene does not show off the most intense fighting choreography, it does provide an important moment in both character arcs.

3 Darth Vader Vs. The Third Sister (Episode 5)

A powerful villain like Vader doubtlessly tires of the less-challenging moments of his work. With a mere flex of his fingers, Vader can kill most victims, so it’s no surprise that he might come to savor the bigger fights. Vader starts this fight by playing with his opponent. Although Reva ignited her lightsaber, Vader doesn’t take out his weapon. Instead, he shows off his power by deflecting Reva’s blows using only the force. Even though we have seen a lot of lightsaber battles by now, this fight is by far one of the most fun and unique to watch, and really details Vader’s power.

2 Anakin Skywalker Vs. Obi-Wan (Episode 5)

Part of what makes this fight compelling is that it is spread out across the entirety of episode five. We cut back and forth between this practice session in the past and the current conflicts between Anakin (as Vader) and Obi-Wan. The way this fight choreography perfectly symbolizes future events in the episode, the series, and the galaxy adds layers of depth.

Additionally, the fighting in this scene captures both of its characters’ personalities. Anakin is rash and assumes victory too soon, while Obi-Wan remains extensively patient. This lighthearted battle with deeper implications envelops both old and new fans into the master-apprentice relationship, and cleverly builds anticipation for the finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

1 Darth Vader Vs. Obi-Wan (Episode 6)

It’s no surprise that the final battle of Obi-Wan Kenobi is the best. As Obi-Wan tries to distract Vader from escaping rebels, the emotional stakes and political repercussions are higher here than anywhere else. The long-awaited rematch between the two master swordsmen stands as the perfect conclusion to the series. While the battle on Mustafar remains one of the most beloved lightsaber battles in the galaxy and one many fans point to when saying Obi-Wan is stronger than Anakin, this battle in many ways takes a more well-rounded approach to showing off each contender’s skills.

Their massive displays of pushing objects with the force are contrasted with simple one-liners, and the strong lightsaber blows are tempered with intricate footwork and dodging. Rather than standing on two separate platforms or swinging from electrical wires, the pair stands close together, making it a tighter and faster fight. Combine this with the polished production of Obi-Wan Kenobi and excellent editing, and this stands as the best lightsaber battle in the series.
