The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, has directed detectives to investigate the alleged killing of a 25-year-old woman, Kehinde Onizeokaraga, during a marital disagreement in Ado Ekiti.
Kehinde was reportedly fatally attacked with a machete on Wednesday by her husband, Sodiq Ibrahim, a meat seller, during an attempt by relatives and other individuals to mediate in the couple’s troubled marriage.
The deceased had reportedly gone to the home of a friend of her father in Ado Ekiti for the reconciliation meeting, unaware that Ibrahim would also be present at the gathering.
The meeting allegedly turned violent when the disagreement between the couple escalated, resulting in Ibrahim allegedly using a machete to inflict multiple injuries on his wife.
The victim, who was said to have previously moved out of her husband’s residence following unresolved marital differences, reportedly died from the injuries sustained in the attack.
Following the incident, Ibrahim allegedly fled from the scene and had not been apprehended as of Thursday. The deceased’s remains were subsequently taken to a mortuary.
A cousin of the deceased, Yussuf Lawrence, appealed to the police to intensify efforts to locate the suspect, saying the family wanted justice for the victim.
Lawrence alleged that Ibrahim left the scene with Kehinde’s mobile phone, which he believed could provide investigators with useful information. He further claimed that some people had been detained in connection with the incident.
Confirming the case, the Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, said Falade had ordered a comprehensive investigation aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the death and ensuring that whoever was responsible was apprehended and brought to justice.
