England national anthem mishap was nothing compared to when Borat song was played during Kazakhstan celebrations

God Save the King during England vs Italy was called ‘the worst national anthem ever’, but it was in fact far from it.

The Euro 2024 qualifier at Napoli’s Diego Armando Maradona Stadium got off to an awkward start when singer Ellynora staged a botched rendition.

She later apologised for her attempt, saying the song was out of sync in her earpiece and she was left ‘mortified’ playing catch-up.

Ellynora has since posted a revised version on her Instagram, and will likely be cringing for a while due to the regretful moment in front of 44,500 football fans.

Hers may have been on a bigger stage, but it’s nothing compared to the mistake an organiser made at the 2012 Kuwait International Shooting Grand Prix.

Winner Mariya Dmitriyenko took to the podium to celebrate with her medal, and put her hand over her chest as she waited for the anthem in front of her country’s flag.

Her country was Kazakhstan – and you may be able to guess what happened next.

Organisers mistakenly played out a mock anthem from Sacha Baron Cohen’s 2006 hit comedy film Borat, which features some incredibly offensive lyrics towards the nation.

They included: ‘Kazakhstan prostitutes cleanest in the region’ and ‘come grasp mighty penis of our leader’.

Much to Dmitriyenko’s credit, she stood through the awkward moment, and even cracked a laugh at the end.

Thankfully the moment didn’t completely define her career, either, as she later competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Her team were less than happy, though, asking for a full apology, and the ceremony was later rerun, while the wrong Serbian anthem was also played in a different ceremony at the same tournament.

Borat is banned in Kazakhstan, and the government also threatened Baron Cohen with legal action.

So in case you’re reading this, Ellynora, just be thankful it wasn’t the Sex Pistol’s national anthem played out in Naples.
