EFL Championship club Blackburn Rovers have voiced their disappointment following Eric Sékou Chelle’s decision to include defender Ryan Alebiosu in Nigeria’s squad for AFCON 2025, Soccernet.ng reports.
Just after the former Arsenal man declared his interest in donning the colours of the Nigerian Eagles, it was the perfect time for Chelle to replace Ola Aina with the London-born.
The Franco-Malian coach’s selections have already come under criticism in the Nigerian football space, and Alebiosu’s inclusion has now sparked concern at club level in England.

In a statement released by the Championship side, Rovers admitted the timing of the call-up was far from ideal for the team.
“Whilst Rovers are disappointed to be losing a key player at such a crucial stage in the season, the club are proud of Ryan’s progress since he completed a summer switch to Ewood Park, which has seen him earn international recognition for the first time in his career,” the club said.

Alebiosu, one of the new faces in Chelle’s AFCON squad, could be unavailable until January 18 should Nigeria reach the final.
That scenario would rule him out of up to seven or eight league matches, a significant blow for Blackburn as they sit just five points above the relegation zone.
