The senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District of Enugu State, Mr Kelvin Chukwu, has detected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Chukwu was elected on the platform of the Labour Party, LP. He announced his defection during a town-hall meeting at Amuri Community, Nkanu West Local Government Area on Thursday.

He stated that his decision was informed by the prolonged crisis and factionalisation within the LP.

According to him, “The protracted crisis rocking the LP, which has led to its fractionalisation, is a development that is seriously affecting its members.”

The defection of Chukwu to APC leaves Senator Okey Ezea as a sole senator of the Labour Party in Enugu State. He represents Enugu North Senatorial District.

Recall that the member representing Enugu-East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, Prof Paul Nnamchi, earlier joined APC. Other erstwhile House of Representatives members from the state that had joined APC from LP are Mr Chimaobi Atu of Enugu North/South Federal Constituency; Mr Sunday Umehia of Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency; Mr Dennis Agbo of Igbo-Eze North/Udenu and Mr Mark Obetta of Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency.

LP had in the 2023 general elections won seven out of the eight House of Representatives seats in the state. LP also won two of the state’s three senatorial seats as well as a majority in the state Assembly. LP has so far lost its majority in the State Assembly due to defection.
