Enzo Fernández has explained why he left Chelsea for Manchester City, saying the club’s strong winning culture and ambition convinced him to take on a new challenge.
The Argentina midfielder has completed a British-record £125 million transfer to Manchester City after ending his spell at Chelsea.
Fernández said City’s track record of competing for major trophies was a major factor behind his decision.
He believes joining the Premier League champions will give him an opportunity to compete at the highest level while continuing his development.
“I wanted a new challenge, and Manchester City offers exactly that,” Fernández said.
“Everything about the club is built around competing and winning. I am excited to be part of that.”
The 25-year-old was also attracted by the depth of talent in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Fernández said playing alongside some of Europe’s best players would help him improve and broaden his game.
“When you look at this squad, there is outstanding quality everywhere,” he said.
“I want to learn from these players, work hard and become a better midfielder.”
His move to Manchester City also gives Fernández the chance to work again with Enzo Maresca, who previously coached him at Chelsea.
The reunion adds another familiar figure to what is otherwise a major new chapter in the midfielder’s career.
Fernández’s departure from Chelsea came after a difficult period at Stamford Bridge. He faced criticism from sections of the club’s support before his exit was completed.
Despite the tension surrounding his final days at Chelsea, the midfielder has maintained that he holds no ill feelings towards the club.
“Chelsea will always have a special place in my heart,” Fernández said in a message to the London club.
His attention, however, has now shifted entirely to Manchester City.
Fernández has vowed to repay the faith placed in him by his new club and make a strong contribution to its pursuit of more silverware.
“I give everything whenever I step onto the pitch,” he said.
“That will not change at Manchester City. I will give everything for this team.”
