MANCHESTER United earned a dramatic 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League today, with Matthijs de Ligt scoring a late equaliser.
The Dutchman headed home from a corner in the sixth minute of stoppage time after two late goals had given Spurs a 2-1 lead.
Brazil striker Richarlison thought he had won the game for Tottenham when he flicked Wilson Odobert’s long-range shot past Senne Lammens.
But in the final minute of injury time, with goalkeeper Lammens up for a Manchester United corner, De Ligt found the net from an acute angle to give his side a point.
Richarlison looked distraught, having jubilantly celebrated his goal, only to realise it had not proved to be the winner.
Meanwhile, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim was equally stunned, having watched his side almost lose a game in which they appeared to be cruising.
Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo, who could play against the Super Eagles in next week’s World Cup play-offs, got United in front in the 32nd minute, heading home Amad Diallo’s precise right-wing cross.
When Lammens made excellent saves to deny Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven after the break, Tottenham looked to be heading for their third straight home Premier League defeat.
However, the jeers that accompanied Mathys Tel’s introduction for Xavi Simons midway through the second half turned to cheers when he controlled a low cross six minutes from time, evaded the attentions of De Ligt and crashed a shot past Lammens.
Then Richarlison, the subject of so much criticism recently, thought he had won it with his goal in the first minute of added time.
However, even with 10 men with Benjamin Sesko having been forced off injured after all five allowed substitutions had been made, De Ligt netted to extend Manchester United’s unbeaten run to five matches for the first time under Amorim.
