SUNDERLAND produced a late rally tonight to secure a 2-2 English Premier League draw against Arsenal at the Stadium of Light, ending the Gunners’ run of 10 consecutive wins in all competitions.
Brian Brobbey netted a dramatic added-time equaliser as Arsenal conceded their first goals since September and had to settle for a point.
The promoted Sunderland were rewarded for an impressive first-half display when former Arsenal academy player Daniel Ballard struck the superb opener as the visitors let in a goal for the first time in 812 minutes.
Arsenal came out stronger after the interval and equalised when Declan Rice won the ball in midfield and Bukayo Saka finished it off with a right-foot shot at the near post in the 54th minute.
Martin Zubimendi struck the woodwork with a fierce effort as Arsenal pushed for a winner, which they thought they had when Leandro Trossard produced a superb 20-yard finish into the top left corner 16 minutes from time.
But the hosts did not give up and, after David Raya denied Brobbey, the substitute was not to be denied when another chance came his way to earn Sunderland a valuable point.
The Dutchman acrobatically hooked a shot into the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time to spark celebrations.
With the result, Arsenal are seven points clear at the top, although that will be reduced when second-placed Manchester City host champions Liverpool tomorrow.
Sunderland, meanwhile, remain unbeaten at home, with the point taking them up to third in the table.
