Eric Chelle has named his first provisional squad as Super Eagles coach, calling up 39 players ahead of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, Footynaija.com reports.

The list features a mix of regulars, returning faces, and fresh names looking to impress before the final cut. But with only a limited number of spots available, who will make it to the final squad?

1. Goalkeeper

No doubts, Stanley Nwabali remains Nigeria’s safest pair of hands after his impressive AFCON campaign, but the competition for backup spots is open.

Maduka Okoye has returned to form at Udinese, while Adeleye Adebayo and Kayode Bankole provide fresh options. Chelle will most likely stick with experience, but a new face might sneak into the final squad.

2. Defence

The defence is packed with not only players who have been tested at the AFCON, but also new call-ups. William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Ola Aina are likely starters, but the likes of Gabriel Osho, and Jordan Torunarigha will push for a place.

Igoh Ogbu and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi are also in contention, making the final decision a tricky one for Chelle.

2. Midfield

Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Frank Onyeka headline the midfield, while Raphael Onyedika and Alhassan Yusuf provide backup options.

The big question is whether new names like Chrisantus Uche and Papa Daniel Mustapha will make it to the final list. They have their qualities, but there are only a few spots available. Some players will have to miss out.

3. Attack

Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are the first names to expect on the team sheet. Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Boniface will also provide depth.

As things stand, Ahmed Musa should also make the cut because his call-up is based on his experience and proven performance.

But Chelle has other attacking options in Paul Onuachu, Nathan Tella, Chidera Ejuke, and Akor Adams.

Chelle has some tough calls to make here. The World Cup qualification is at stake, and he needs players who can deliver right away.
