THE European Union (EU) has declared its solidarity with Nigerians affected by recent violent attacks across parts of the country, including those in the southern and northeastern regions.
In a statement issued yesterday by Anouar El Anouni, the EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security, the bloc acknowledged recent comments made by the U.S. administration regarding Nigeria and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the nation through the ongoing security challenges.
“The EU expresses its solidarity with all communities and families affected by the violence, including the recent large-scale attacks in the southern belt and the northeast,” El Anouni stated.
He emphasized that the EU remains firmly committed to defending human rights, religious freedom, and the protection of minority groups.
“We reaffirm our commitment to freedom of religion and belief, and to the peaceful coexistence of the Nigerian population beyond geographical, ethnic, political, or religious differences,” he added.
El Anouni noted that while religion plays a role in some incidents, it is not the sole driver of violence in Nigeria, pointing to the complex mix of factors behind the unrest.
He also disclosed that the European Union continues to collaborate with Nigerian authorities in implementing a wide range of programs aimed at preventing violence, consolidating peace, and providing humanitarian assistance to victims and displaced persons.
“The EU works closely with relevant Nigerian institutions to prevent further violence, strengthen peacebuilding efforts, and support victims of violence and forced displacement,” he said.
The statement underscores the EU’s ongoing partnership with Nigeria in addressing insecurity while promoting tolerance and social harmony across diverse communities.
