The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced major reconstruction work at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
In a travel advisory issued on Friday, the agency appealed to passengers to get to the airport well ahead of their flight schedules to avoid delays or missed departures resulting from disruptions caused by the renovations.
The reconstruction, part of a nationwide aviation infrastructure upgrade, follows the approval of over N900 billion by the Federal Executive Council on August 1. The rehabilitation of MMIA’s Terminal One is a central component of the projects.
FAAN advised travellers to obey traffic instructions around the airport, use designated car parks, and avoid unnecessary visits during the period of the works due to limited space.
“Only those travelling should visit the airport during the reconstruction,” the authority said, while urging passengers to cooperate to ensure a smoother travel experience.
Speaking on the development, Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, explained that the Lagos terminal would be stripped down to its structural base and rebuilt with new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
The project is estimated to cost N712.25 billion and is expected to be completed within 22 months.
