THE National Peace Committee (NPC), chaired by former head of state Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) and convened by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, has announced its plans to hold a national stakeholders meeting in Abuja as part of efforts to address the numerous challenges confronting the country.
This information was shared in a joint statement by the two leaders.
The committee highlighted that the 2023 general elections were characterized by a renewed sense of optimism and a desire for change among Nigerians. This optimism was reflected in the registration numbers, with 93,469,008 individuals registering for the 2023 elections compared to only 57,938,945 registered voters in 1999.
“Nigerians anticipated that the 2023 elections would lead to an administration capable of effectively tackling the nation’s enduring socio-economic issues,” the statement noted.
It further explained that while the preparations for the elections raised hopes for positive socio-economic and political transformation, the results of the highly contested presidential elections exacerbated existing regional and ethnic divisions that have defined Nigeria’s journey as a nation.
The committee added that despite the government’s well-intentioned policies aimed at improving the lives and well-being of citizens, these efforts have not met public expectations, leading to widespread economic hardship.
“This challenging situation has sparked frustration and discontent, culminating in recent nationwide protests regarding hunger,” it stated. The demands raised during these protests underscore the urgent challenges facing the nation and the critical need for responsive governance.
In response, and in accordance with its mandate to mediate in electoral and non-electoral issues that impact Nigeria’s peace and stability, the NPC has resolved to organize a one-day town hall meeting with key stakeholders to engage in open discussions and explore solutions to the current socio-political and economic troubles facing the country.
The meeting is scheduled for September 26, 2024, at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja.
The committee emphasized, “This gathering will serve as a platform for constructive dialogue and collaboration, allowing for the discussion of public concerns and aspirations, with the outcomes to be presented to the government.
“It is a vital step toward bridging the gap between the government and its citizens, ensuring their voices are heard and their legitimate concerns are addressed.”
