PHASE 1 of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit has successfully transported over 250,000 passengers in just over 100 days of operation.
John Zhao, an official from the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), which built and operates the first phase of the rail system, shared this information today on his X account.
According to Zhao, the rail system features two lines that have been operating safely since commencing commercial services. The total length of the rail lines is 45 kilometers, servicing 12 stations, and the trains can reach speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour.
He emphasized that the rail line connects the city center, the international airport, and Kubwa satellite town, significantly alleviating traffic congestion in the city.
“Phase 1 of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit by #CCECC has been operating safely for over 100 days! With 2 lines stretching a total of 45 km and 12 stations, the trains can reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h.
“It connects Abuja’s city center, the international airport, and Kubwa satellite town. So far, over 250,000 passengers have been served, making a substantial impact on traffic congestion in the capital. Check it out!” ... stated.
Known as the Metro Rail, it commenced commercial operations on May 29, 2024, after being inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu.
Additionally, it was announced that President Tinubu approved the extension of complimentary train rides on the Abuja Rail Mass Transit for an additional six months, until the end of the year. This decision followed a previous announcement by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, granting commuters two months of free rides on the metro rail.
