TWO persons have been saved from a building collapse incident at Close 10, Drive 5, Second Gate in the Prince and Princess Estate, located in the Gudu District of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
This was revealed today in a statement by the Head of Public Affairs at the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa.
Isa mentioned that the Acting Director General of FEMD, Florence Wenegieme, affirmed that all the workers vacated the premises upon noticing signs of the building’s impending collapse.
Two persons however, in a different bungalow adjacent to the building became trapped under the debris from the collapsed structure.
The trapped occupants were successfully rescued by the FEMD search and rescue team, who had to cut through the window protectors to reach them.
In the meantime, Wenegieme is urging developers and individuals to consistently adhere to building codes.
She stressed the need of conducting integrity tests on buildings before any renovation work.
The Acting DG stressed the importance of engaging professionals and providing protective gear for workers on site to ensure their safety.
Furthermore, she appealed to developers to secure insurance coverage for both the building and the workers present at the construction site.
