THE Federal Government (FG) has declared tomorrow, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away yesterday, July 13, in a London hospital.
This announcement was made via a statement from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, as part of the seven-day national mourning period approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The declaration was formally issued by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The statement noted that the holiday is intended as a tribute to Buhari’s service to Nigeria, his contributions to democratic governance, and the legacy he leaves behind.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and development. This public holiday offers Nigerians a moment to reflect on his leadership and values,” the Minister said.
Citizens have been urged to use the day to promote peace, unity, and patriotism, in line with Buhari’s vision for the country. National flags are to remain at half-mast throughout the mourning period.
The Federal Government also extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians.
Meanwhile, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, announced the burial arrangements today. Following discussions with the late president’s family and associates in London, it was confirmed that Buhari’s body will arrive in Katsina by noon tomorrow, with the burial scheduled for 2 p.m. in his hometown of Daura.
