THE Federal Government has delivered 64 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, each with a capacity of 100, to the Organised Labour and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
During the bus handover event held yesterday at the banquet hall of the State House in Abuja, both the Ministers of Information, Mohammed Idris, and Finance, Wale Edun, announced that an additional 700 CNG buses are expected to arrive in the country soon.
Since the removal of the petrol subsidy in 2023, Nigerians have faced significant increases in transportation fares and the cost of goods.
While there is ongoing demand among the populace for the reinstatement of the subsidy, President Bola Tinubu’s administration maintains that the solution lies in utilizing gas, with plans to transition over 200,000 vehicles and tricycles to run on compressed natural gas as a more affordable energy source.
Nuhu Toro, The Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Uche Ekwe, the Head of the International Desk at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), commended the government’s initiative.
However, they pointed out that the number of buses provided is insufficient to meet the needs of the entire Nigerian workforce.
