THE Federal Government and the Labour Union have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the new minimum wage of ₦70,000.
Yesterday, a statement from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Eno Olotu, announced that the committee responsible for civil servants’ salaries has agreed to implement the new minimum wage starting from July 29, 2024.
This agreement was reached during the committee’s meeting held in Abuja yesterday. The statement further revealed that the committee recommended that the wage award, which the Federal Government had previously suspended, should continue until July 28, 2024.
The committee led by Walson-Jack, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, took into account the country’s economic situation in their decision-making process.
Following the signing, Walson-Jack, who also chaired the committee, commended the members for their diligent efforts in completing the assigned task.
She stated, “Both the Trade Union and Government representatives have agreed on the consequential adjustments in salaries resulting from the new minimum wage of ₦70,000.” She added that all committee members have reviewed and signed the MOU, with copies handed over to representatives from both sides.
Walson-Jack described the process as the most efficient and amicable negotiations to date and confirmed that the signed MOU will be submitted to the Federal Government for further action.
In his comments, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, the National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council representing the Trade Union side, commended the Head of Civil Service and expressed his satisfaction with the committee’s achievements.
