THE Federal Government has postponed the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session initially scheduled for tomorrow, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The session was deferred due to the state funeral planned for the same day in Daura, Katsina State.
A new date for the meeting will be communicated by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation following the conclusion of the burial rites.
As part of the national mourning, the government has also declared tomorrow July 15, a public holiday.
This is in addition to a seven-day mourning period, during which national flags are to be flown at half-mast.
The announcement was made to honour Buhari’s “invaluable contributions to the country,” according to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari died yesterday, July 13, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. in a London hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 82.
In keeping with Islamic traditions, his remains are expected to arrive in Katsina by noon tomorrow and will be interred in Daura at 2:00 p.m. Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State confirmed these details following discussions with Buhari’s family and associates in the UK.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, and other family members in London on Monday.
He was joined by senior officials, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and Deputy Chief of Staff Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia.
According to Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), the visit coincided with ongoing formalities for the release of Buhari’s body from the London hospital.
Back home, mourners have started converging at Buhari’s Daura residence, offering prayers and sharing tributes. While security has been heightened around the Emirate Council, local commercial activities continue in surrounding areas.
Tributes continue to pour in across the country, describing Buhari as a leader of integrity and principle. Born in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari first led Nigeria as a military head of state from 1984 to 1985, and later returned as a civilian president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.
