THE Federal Government has announced plans to establish a special security unit, referred to as “Power Rangers,” to protect electricity infrastructure across Nigeria.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, aims to prevent vandalism and theft of power installations, which have contributed to persistent blackouts nationwide.
Tunji-Ojo revealed this during an interview, explaining that the unit will be made up of officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The move comes in response to increasing incidents of power infrastructure vandalism, which have left many communities without electricity.
The minister, drawing inspiration from the Mines Marshals, a security unit introduced in March 2024 to tackle challenges in the mining sector, emphasized the importance of sector-specific security solutions rather than a generalized approach to national asset protection.
Although no specific date has been set for the official launch of the Power Rangers, Tunji-Ojo confirmed that the recruitment and screening process for officers is already underway.
The unit will have operatives deployed in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to ensure comprehensive protection of power installations nationwide.
The government is currently assessing officers based on their competence, area of specialization, and physical capability to ensure effective execution of the mandate.
