Finnish Airports Recorded 1.4 Million Air Passengers Last Month

A total of 1.4 million passengers flew through Finnish airports last month, in February, according to a new report of the Finnish statistical agency, Statistics Finland.

The same source has revealed that this figure shows that the number of passengers was 74 per cent higher compared to the same month last year, and four times lower than in February 2019, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

During February of this year, the number of domestic passenger flights increased by 50 per cent and international flights by 86 per cent in comparison with the same period of last year.

Figures provided by Statistics Finland show that in the past month, a total of 1.1 million passengers flew through Helsinki Airport alone. At the same time, a total of 0.3 million passengers also flew through other domestic airports.

As a result, Helsinki airport marked 76 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports. Meanwhile, the number of passengers was 75 per cent of the pre-pandemic level.

Such data show that the number of passengers at the Helsinki airport was 28 per cent lower, and the total number of passengers at other domestic airports was 17 per cent lower than in February 2019. However, compared to February of a year before, at Helsinki airport, the number of passengers was 80 per cent higher in February 2023 and 58 per cent higher at other domestic airports.

“The exceptionally high relative growth in the number of passengers compared to last year is caused by the collapse of air traffic due to the corona pandemic starting from spring 2020,” the report reads.

According to Finnish Statistics, in annual figures, the year 2019 is used as the year of comparison to describe the number of air passengers before the pandemic.

Moreover, in February of this year, 72 per cent of air passengers travelled on international flights and 28 per cent on domestic flights. On the contrary, the total number of passengers decreased in January, but domestic flights had 25,000 passengers more than a month ago.

Further Statistics of Finland revealed that the share of passengers on international flights at Helsinki airport was 81 per cent, while at other airports, it was 39 per cent.

Last month the air transport of goods and mail reached 12,745 tons, where in total, 99.6 per cent of them were transported through Helsinki Airport, while 99 per cent in traffic between Finland and foreign countries. In addition, a total of 5,346 tons or 42 per cent of the transported volume of goods, were inbound, and 7,398 tons or 58 per cent, were outbound.
