Governor Ademola Adeleke‘s government of Osun State has pulled down no fewer than 30 buildings erected on waterways and swampy areas in a renewed effort to avert flooding across the state.
Naijaonpoint reports that the exercise, which affected structures along riverbanks and in swampy locations, follows recent flood alerts issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET). Authorities say the move is part of a broader flood prevention strategy.
Confirming the development on Sunday, the Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, said the operation was carried out in multiple towns.
“In Osogbo, we have about 15 structures that we removed, also in Ile-Ife about six, Ilesa six, and in other towns. This is to ensure the safety of the residents of the state,” he said.
Adejoorin explained that property owners were given warnings and ultimatums to remove the illegal buildings before the demolition exercise began.
“Where we have illegal structures, we give them notice to remove them and after the notice, if it is not removed, we demolish it,” he added.
The commissioner noted that the government had already embarked on dredging waterways since December and had cleared refuse dumped in drainage channels to prevent blockages.
“We have taken proactive steps to ameliorate imminent flooding in the state following the prediction of NiMET,” Adejoorin said.
He urged residents to stop dumping refuse in waterways and to obey environmental laws to avoid future sanctions.
He also expressed confidence that with the measures in place, Osun would not experience flooding severe enough to displace residents this year.
