Spencer Pratt announced Wednesday that he plans to challenge Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in the June mayoral election, one year after wildfires destroyed his family’s home in Pacific Palisades.
Speaking to fellow fire survivors at a rally marking the anniversary of the disaster, Pratt delivered a blistering critique of city leadership.
“The system in Los Angeles isn’t struggling, it’s fundamentally broken,” he said. “It is a machine designed to protect the people at the top while the rest of us drown in toxic smoke and ash.”
Pratt was living in Pacific Palisades with his wife, Heidi Montag, and their two children when the fire tore through the neighborhood last January, destroying their $2.5 million home and a house owned by his parents. Since then, Pratt has turned social media into a platform for his anger, frequently calling out Mayor Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Best known for his time on MTV’s The Hills, Pratt acknowledged that his candidacy may surprise some.
“Residents were failed at every level,” he told the crowd, adding that city officials should have done more to prevent the fire and protect communities.
Bass, a nationally prominent Democrat elected in 2022, faces multiple challengers in the nonpartisan primary. A spokesperson for her campaign dismissed Pratt’s run, calling it a publicity move tied to his upcoming memoir.
