Free Britney Advocates Plan Rally to Support Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols

Published

Star Trek legend Nichelle Nichols will soon have her next conservatorship hearing, and many #FreeBritney supporters will be there holding a planned rally outside the courthouse. With Britney Spears now no longer a part of her controversial conservatorship, some advocates have shifted focus to #FreeNichelle, a movement launched with the goal of getting Nichols out of her conservatorship as well. Supporters say Nichols was “forced into a conservatorship by her estranged son” in 2018.

“As we’ve seen from Britney Spears’s case, conservatorships are often used to benefit the conservator – NOT the conservatee they are designed to protect,” a statement on FreeNichelle.com reads. “Though Nichelle has developed some memory loss as she’s aged, this is not a reason to strip her of her human and civil rights. In fact, conservatorship relies on the ableist notion that physical disability and/or mental disability justify the removal of civil rights and freedoms. They absolutely do not.”

Just last month, Nichols had her final Comic-Con appearance in L.A. where she was honored by fans and fellow Star Trek stars. She spent the weekend signing autographs and meeting with fans but she didn’t make any public statements. Her retirement is one source of contention with the #FreeNichelle supporters who say Nichols had no intention of retiring.

Nichelle’s longtime friend, Angelique Fawcette, has been fighting Nichelle’s conservatorship since its inception in 2018. On Jan. 10, she will present her objections to the conservatorship’s Second and Final Accounting in the State of California. Touch of Rose Project and Free Britney L.A. organizers are also planning a rally outside Stanley Mosk Courthouse during the hearing. They’re encouraging those who cannot attend in person to support the movement online with the hashtags #FreeNichelle and #FreeNichelleNichols.

“In 2013, Nichelle Nichols asked me to ‘have her back’ and I continue to do so,” says Fawcette, a producer, CEO, activist, Kasem Cares board member, and member of the NAACP. “After four years of fighting in Court for her Human and Civil Rights, Nichelle still has not been allowed to go to court. Her Son/Conservator has denied her of her life wishes, he sold the one and only home that she wanted to live and die in, denied her the ability to go to court, denied her access to her friends, and placed her on a retirement tour when she never wanted to retire. This case is the sad normal in our country, yet much like Britney’s case, it has the ability to affect the hundreds of thousands of other abusive Conservatorships across this Country. How long will the powers that be allow the Elderly, the Disabled, and the Vulnerable to be stripped of their rights? I love Nichelle and I will fight for her rights until she gets them back.”

Kerri Kasem, daughter of Casey Kasem and founder of Kasem Cares, adds: “When Angelique called Kasem Cares a few years ago regarding Nichelle Nichols, we didn’t hesitate to help. After attending several court hearings and watching the tape made by Nichelle explaining exactly what she wanted, what I have seen are her explicit demands being ignored. I have also seen her friends being shooed away from her and yelled at. It seems as though there is isolation involved in this case, along with a complete disregard for what Nichelle wants and who she wants to take care of her. We stand behind Angelique, who only has Nichelle‘s best interests in mind.”

The second season of Bridgerton follows Lord Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), the eldest Bridgerton sibling and Viscount, as he sets out to find a suitable wife. Driven by his duty to uphold the family name, Anthony’s search for a debutante who meets his impossible standards seems ill-fated until Kate (Simone Ashley) and her younger sister Edwina (Charithra Chandran) Sharma arrive from India.

When Anthony begins to court Edwina, Kate discovers the true nature of his intentions — a true love match is not high on his priority list — and decides to do everything in her power to stop the union. But in doing so, Kate and Anthony’s verbal sparring matches only bring them closer together, complicating matters on both sides. Across Grosvenor Square, the Featheringtons must welcome the newest heir to their estate while Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) continues to navigate the ton whilst keeping her deepest secret from the people closest to her.

In addition to the new season of Bridgerton, it was also announced last year that the Bridgerton universe will expand with a Queen Charlotte spinoff series. The spinoff will explore the origins of Queen Charlotte as well as young Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury.

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,” Netflix’s Bela Bajaria said in a statement at the time. “Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.”

Sofia Vergara Is Unrecognizable in Image From Netflix Crime Series Griselda

Many of Sofia Vergara’s fans are used to seeing the actress in comedy mode as one of the lead stars of Modern Family, the hugely popular sitcom that helped the Columbian actress become the highest-paid female star in Hollywood in 2020. With the series coming to an end in April 2020, Vergara is now seemingly turning her attention to other projects, and one of those is the true-crime drama Griselda, in which she plays the title role of a drug trafficker who goes by many names. Coming from the team behind Narcos, Vergara will also be executive producer on the six-part series, which is expected to arrive on Netflix later this year, and Entertainment Weekly shared a first look at an almost unrecognizable Vergara in character.

Once known for being the cover girl of many men’s magazines such as FHM, Maxim and others, Sofia Vergara has more than proved her acting capabilities in the decades since, and while she has not managed to get that big movie break, her small screen appearances, which also includes a judging stint on America’s Got Talent, have seen her commanding the highest salary of any actress on U.S. television for a number of years. Now, with Modern Family having ended after 250 episodes, Vergara seems to be looking to get something a little more serious under her belt with her new role, one which has been a passion project of hers for almost eight years.

Griselda tells the story of the ruthless and violent drug trafficker who became one of the world’s wealthiest criminals, Griselda Blanco, also known by the pseudonyms of La Madrina, Black Widow, the Cocaine Godmother and Queen of Narco-Trafficking. In the image, Vergara is seen sitting at a table, smoking a cigarette at an office desk which is unlikely to be getting used for above-board day to day business transactions.

The story of Griselda Blanco may not be well known to many, but Sofia Vergara’s appearance in the role is not the first time the drug baroness’ story has been told on screen. Blanco’s tale as one of the most notorious U.S. drug traffickers of the 1970s and 1980s was detailed in the documentaries Cocaine Cowboys and Cocaine Cowboys II, and in 2014 it was announced that her story would be dramatized in the Lifetime movie, Cocaine Godmother, which starred Catherine Zeta-Jones as Blanco. Even almost a decade ago, the casting caused some backlash at a Welsh actress being cast in a role as a Columbian, especially when there were very few roles being made available to Hispanic stars at the time.

This time around, there are no such issues to be called out, and there is no doubt that Vergara will bring all of her talent to the role. It is not known whether the series will focus on just one part of Blanco’s life or will see her entire story play out, including her many years spent in prison and the drive-by assassination that killed her. Either way, more will become known soon enough as Netflix are clearly ready to start promoting the series, which means it will not be too long before we get to see the finished result on-screen.
