FreeNnamdiKanuNow: Anger as Security Operatives Block Abuja Roads

free nnamdi kanu protest

Many residents of Abuja were stranded on Monday morning after security operatives blocked major roads and mounted barricades across the city due to a protest organised by a former presidential candidate and activist, Mr Omoyele Sowore.

The publisher of Sahara Reporters is calling for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr Nnamdi Kanu.

The demonstration is tagged FreeNnamdiKanuNow. Mr Kanu has been in detention for years despite being granted bail by Nigerian courts.

The protest, which started today, caused serious traffic jams and made it difficult for workers and commuters to reach their destinations.

The roadblocks led to gridlock, especially for those coming from Bwari, Ushafa, Dutse, and parts of Kubwa heading to the city centre.

Because of the planned protest, security forces were stationed at different strategic areas to prevent any disturbance. However, the tight security ended up affecting ordinary people trying to go about their daily activities.

It was gathered that motorists along the Nyanya-Mararaba road were stuck for hours because of the checkpoints on the route.
