The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day anniversary will be marked with a low-key celebration.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this at the Pre-Independence World Press Conference held on Monday in Abuja.
Naijaonpoint reports that the Minister corroborated the earlier report that the theme of this year’s celebration is “All Hands on Deck.”
“Activities will be low-key. We started with the Jummat Prayers on Friday and the Thanksgiving Service on Sunday. The National Value Charter, as championed by the National Orientation Agency, will also be unveiled. The National Students’ Debate is another activity that will be held to mark the 65th independence anniversary celebration,” Idris said.
National Value Charter to Be Unveiled
A major highlight of the programme will be the unveiling of the National Value Charter (NVC) by the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
The charter, according to the Minister, is a framework for cultivating national pride and fostering responsible citizenship by outlining both government commitments and citizens’ obligations.
It is divided into two broad sections:
The Nigerian Promise: The government’s pledge to uphold values such as equality, democracy, entrepreneurship, peace, inclusivity, freedom, and meritocracy.
The Citizen’s Code: A call on Nigerians to embrace discipline, duty of care, tolerance, leadership, accountability, environmental awareness, and resilience.
The NOA explained that the campaign aims to promote these values through public sensitisation, collaboration with community stakeholders, and the use of digital platforms.
The ultimate goal, Idris said, is to build a more unified and value-driven society, where both leaders and citizens are committed to fostering peace, accountability, and national development.
