A legal practitioner, Obed Agu, has expressed displeasure over the political crisis confronting Rivers State, saying it is not helping governance.
Naijaonpoint reports that Agu, during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, said it is unbecoming that, after President Bola Tinubu’s intervention to resolve the issue, the House of Assembly is still pursuing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Agu said that even though the courts cannot stop any arm of government from carrying out its constitutional obligations, the court could still make an order after looking into the proceedings.
He said, “I want to lend my voice to the majority of Nigerians who have actually called for a political solution to what is happening in Rivers State.
“It’s indeed becoming unbecoming that after the president has taken steps politically to the issues in the state, still, the House of Assembly members are still going on with impeachment proceedings.
“This is not helping the governance in Rivers state. The judicial proceedings that have taken effect by the claimant, the deputy governor, every Nigerian knows that there is separation of powers for the executive, legislature and the judiciary and that has actually imbibed in our Constitution.
“However, checks and balances is what we look at. It is right that the court cannot stop any arm of government from functioning its constitutional obligations or duties.
“But that does not take away the fact that the court as well when it looks into the proceedings or the process that had occurred at the intervening time, could make an order. And that is what the High Court sitting in Port-Harcourt has done.”
