Full List Of Federal And State Lawmakers Who Dumped NNPP In Kano

A total of 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and eight members of the House of Representatives have resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), in what appears to be a dramatic realignment within the state’s political landscape.

Naijaonpoint reports that the lawmakers announced their defection on Saturday, pledging allegiance to the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf. Their resignation significantly weakens the NNPP’s influence in Kano State’s legislature at both state and federal levels.

The defections were confirmed in separate statements by the spokesperson to the Speaker of the State Assembly, Kamaluddeen Shawai, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sanusi Bature.

Shawai released the names of the 22 defecting state legislators, while Bature named the eight House of Representatives members who have left the NNPP in solidarity with Governor Yusuf.

“The affected lawmakers have reaffirmed their support for the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,” Bature stated.

With this development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) now holds a commanding majority in the 40-member Kano State House of Assembly, controlling 36 seats.

The NNPP, which initially held 26 seats following the 2023 elections, is now left with just two members in the state legislature, representing Kiru and Nasarawa.

Two seats, Ungogo and Kano Municipal, remain vacant following the deaths of their representatives.

Kano, which has 24 federal constituencies, initially had 18 NNPP members in the House of Representatives. However, several key figures, including Abdulmumin Jibrin (Kiru/Bebeji), Sagir Koki (Kano Municipal), Alhassan Rurum (Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure), and Abdullahi Sani (Rogo/Karaye), had previously crossed over to the APC.

With the latest defections, the APC now controls 19 of Kano’s 24 federal seats, while the NNPP is left with only five:

Kura/Garun Malam/Madobi

Wudil/Garko

Tarauni

Ungogo/Minjibir

Warawa/Dawakin Kudu

Notably, Aliyu Madaki (Dala), who currently serves as the House Minority Leader, remains a factional member of the NNPP. However, he has long distanced himself from the Kwankwasiyya movement, casting uncertainty over his future allegiance.
