Full List of Political Parties currently Applying for INEC Registration Ahead of 2027 Elections

As preparations intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has received applications from 110 political associations seeking registration as official political parties.

The Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made this disclosure during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, 25th June 2025. He stated that the applications are currently being reviewed in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, as well as the Commission’s guidelines and regulations.

“As of Monday, 23rd June 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations wishing to register as political parties. We are processing the requests in accordance with the procedure outlined in the law, as well as our regulations and guidelines,” Professor Yakubu said.

He further noted that all submitted applications have been acknowledged, with the exception of six recent entries, which are expected to be acknowledged before the end of the week.

INEC Advises Applicants to Follow Legal Guidelines

INEC has advised all individuals and associations seeking registration to carefully consult the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022. This document outlines the legal and procedural steps required for successful registration.

Key requirements for party registration include:

  • A functional national headquarters located in Abuja.

  • Demonstrated presence in at least 24 states of the federation.

  • Evidence of democratic internal structures and leadership.

  • Submission of constitutions and manifestos.

Only associations that fulfill these criteria will be granted full political party status and permitted to participate in the 2027 elections.
