The Ghoulies are back just in time for Halloween. The horror-comedy monsters debuted on screen forty years ago at the peak of cinematic horror, but like so many others, petered out in the early ‘90s. Now, the franchise is back with a new one-shot comic that promises to deliver the Ghoulies classic twisted take on horror.
Ghoulies #1 hits shelves next week, revitalizing the underappreciated ‘80s horror series after years of dormancy.
Much of the details of the Ghoulies comic remain under wraps for now, but from the covers for the issue, it is clear the franchise’s approach to comedic carnage and over-the-top gross-out visuals remains intact.

The Ghoulies franchise is overdue for a renaissance. A cinematic reboot seems inevitable, of course, but it has taken far longer than most horror fans would have expected. Ghoulies #1, the new comic book revival of the series, is the perfect way to reintroduce the iconic monsters, and potentially elevate them to a new level of terrifying.
Here is how the synopsis for the Ghoulies comic describes it:
Just when you thought it was safe to flush, the Ghoulies are back to wreak havoc in a brand-new comic book! When three teens stumble upon a collection of ancient spells on the Dark Web, they conjure filthy demonic creatures and soon find themselves considering the dangers and powerful possibilities of using dark magic. Terror and mayhem soon encapsulate a small community as one teen seeks out his demonic destiny, and it’s up to his two friends to stop him, with the help of an unlikely hero, and a secret government agency that specializes in the occult.
In other words, it sounds like a fun modernization of the ’80s series, one that will serve up the characteristic gore expected from these nightmare-fuel creatures, while also serving up some unexpected twists and turns with this new take on the franchise.
Notably, Ghoulies #1’s synopsis teases “an unlikely hero,” which has fans wondering if the introduction of a heroic Ghoulie might be in store. The synopsis promises the kind of mapcap energy that made the original Ghoulies films cult classics. Meaning this could just be the start of a brand-new era for Ghoulies.

Ghoulies in comic form is also an opportunity to deliver Ghoulies unrestrained in a way fans have never fully seen before. The comic is not hampered by budget, nor does it have to suffer cuts from the MPAA in order to secure a rating. The Ghoulies comic can be full of gore, and make its eponymous monsters more grotesque than ever before.
