Few people know God of War‘s Kratos better than Christopher Judge, the actor who portrayed him in the 2018 installment and God of War: Ragnarok. Along with the original voice actor, T.C. Carson, Judge has helped to define the character for millions of players. Now that the live-action adaptation has cast its Kratos, Judge has chimed in to offer some encouragement.
Prime Video announced the casting of Ryan Hurst as Kratos on X, and Judge responded with a few kind words. In response to a congratulatory message from Santa Monica Studio, Judge added “Congrats Ryan!!! You’re gonna be great… BOI !!!“

Christopher Judge’s response doesn’t waste many words, perhaps as a result of an infamous moment at The Game Awards 2022 where he set a record for the longest speech. Even so, it says everything that needs to be said. For Ryan Hurst, getting Judge’s seal of approval probably means a lot, even if it comes with Kratos’s trademark “BOI.”
This isn’t Hurst’s first involvement with the God of War series, as he previously lent his voice to the role of Thor in God of War: Ragnarok. For a live-action appearance, his physicality is nothing to sneeze at. The 6’6″ actor has come a long way from his baby-faced appearance in Saving Private Ryan, later taking on macho roles in projects like Sons of Anarchy.

Kratos Has A Strong Legacy
Living up to Christopher Judge’s performance as Kratos is a tall order, but the same could be said for Judge living up to Carson’s original take on the character. The two previous actors finally met each other last year, so hopefully, all three can get together some time in the future.
God of War players might be reassured by Hurst’s history with the series, suggesting that some fans of the franchise are involved in the new adaptation. Just how well he can adapt to the role of Kratos remains to be seen, of course, but he stands a better chance of making it work than a celebrity stunt casting probably would.
For now, Hurst is the only announced cast member, so the actors behind key roles, like Atreus and Freya, remain unknown. Filming should start sometime this year, however. With a little luck, it might not be long before we know more about who will join Hurst in bringing Prime Video’s new take on God of War to life.
