Greenplinth Africa is set to deploy six million free clean cookstoves in Lagos as a pilot scheme.
In a statement, the organisation said the project, which will be replicated across the federation, falls under the 80 million clean cookstoves project.
The 80 million clean cookstoves project, according to the President/Chief Executive Officer of Greenplinth Africa, Dr Olawale Akinwumi, said the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism though the largest clean cooking initiative in the world is a bold, economic, social, and environmental blueprint.
Akinwumi, who spoke at the opening ceremony of 80m PACM-Compliant clean cook project implementation retreat on Tuesday, said, “We gathered here not just to discuss another climate initiative, but to witness the launch of a historic game-changing project that will place Nigeria at the forefront of the compliance carbon markets under UNFCCC’s Article 6.4ER framework.”
Elaborating, Akinwumi added that the 80 million clean cookstoves project will “deploy 80 million highly efficient clean cookstoves across Nigeria, generate a minimum of 1.2 billion tonnes of compliance carbon offset, create over 3.5 million green jobs.
Establish a forex-denominated green endowment fund for sustainable development, and improve the health of millions, especially women and children.”
To ensure the highest standards of measurement, reporting, and verification, Greenplinth Africa disclosed that it is partnering with Carbon AI of Canada and the Lagos State Government.
Aside from Lagos, the CEO disclosed that 19 States have committed to supporting the project, adding that the initiative is the first in Nigeria in over 12 years to receive an endorsement from the Nigerian Climate Change Council, signifying its importance to the Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said, “Today, we also celebrate a historic milestone: Lagos, in partnership with GreenPlinth Africa and global collaborators, unveils Africa’s first Subnational Carbon Exchange—the second globally after California.
“This pioneering platform, housed within the Office of Climate Change & Circular Economy, will establish Lagos as Africa’s hub for compliance carbon markets, attracting billions in climate capital while de-risking investments in low-carbon development.
“Lagos will lead by setting a standard for subnational governments across Africa and the Global South. This exchange will catalyse green investments, decarbonise fiscal and asset balance sheets, and create a self-sustaiinng green economy.”
