The Zamfara State Police Command on Thursday confirmed the abduction of two councillors and an Imam by suspected gunmen in Tsauni community, Gusau.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, disclosed the incident to journalists via telephone.

According to him, the councillors—representing Gidan Gona and Tsibiri wards in Maradun Local Government Area—alongside the Imam of Tsauni, were seized by the assailants around 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, shortly after prayers.

“The victims were abducted in front of their houses,” Abubakar said, adding that security operatives have since been deployed to the area as efforts are underway to rescue them.

The News of Nigeria reports that Tsauni community, located behind the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Zamfara Sector Command headquarters in Gusau, has long hosted internally displaced persons affected by armed banditry.

Abubakar urged residents to support the police with timely information to curb such attacks.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Maradun LGA, Sanusi Gamagiwa, confirmed the incident, noting that six people were initially abducted.

“They later released three persons and left with the two councillors and the Imam of the area. So far, they have yet to contact anyone of us to know their demands,” Gamagiwa said.
