Gunmen have reportedly opened fire on the campaign convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Osun State, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO.
Oyebamiji was said to have survived the incident without injury, along with members of his entourage, after the attackers allegedly targeted the convoy with several rounds of gunfire.
The reported attack occurred on Tuesday as the Tinubu/AMBO campaign team returned from an event held to inaugurate party canvassers in the Ife federal constituency.
Sources within the APC described the incident as a suspected assassination attempt, raising fresh concerns over the security situation ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
According to accounts from party officials, the convoy came under attack while returning from the campaign engagement.
Despite the reported gunfire, Oyebamiji and those travelling with him were able to escape unharmed.
Images and videos circulating online have also purportedly shown vehicles associated with the convoy bearing marks believed to have been caused by bullets.
However, questions have emerged on social media over some of the damage seen on the vehicles.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the number of attackers and their identities, have not been independently established.
Police authorities had not publicly confirmed the attack or identified any suspects as of Thursday morning.
The development comes at a particularly sensitive period in Osun, with political parties intensifying their activities ahead of the election.
Oyebamiji is seeking to unseat incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party in a contest that has already witnessed allegations of intimidation, attacks and political violence from rival camps.
Both political sides have, at different times, accused their opponents of targeting campaign activities and supporters across the state.
Reacting to the latest development, APC figures close to the campaign described the incident as an attempt to derail the party’s activities during the final days of the electioneering period.
They also urged security agencies to strengthen protection around candidates, campaign teams and other political actors as election day approaches.
For many stakeholders, the reported shooting has added another layer of uncertainty to an already tense electoral environment.
With voters due to cast their ballots within days, attention is now turning to security agencies for an official account of what happened and measures to prevent further violence before, during and after the election.
