A Nigerian working in York hospital in the United Kingdom, Adewale Kudabo, has been sentenced to one year in jail for kissing a patient at a care home.
Naijaonpoint reports that Kudabo had pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault on the first day of his trial in April.
The court Judge, Alex Menary, held that Kudabo abused the trust placed in him as a medical professional.
Menary said the victim, who had trusted Kudabo, said to him, “You abused that trust.”
The court heard that the offences had led to the victim suffering from anxiety and experiencing flashbacks to what happened at the hospital with Kudabo.
On June 10, the judge jailed Kudabo for one year and stated that he must serve half of the sentence before becoming eligible for release.
The York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs York Hospital, has offered sincere apologies to the victim, stressing that Kudabo had left his job at the hospital soon after the offences.
The prosecutor, Henry Fernandez, said Kudabo was assigned to bathe the patient who was in a lot of pain, and when he finished bathing the patient, Kudabo reportedly kissed her on the lips.
Fernandez stated that the victim, despite being in considerable pain, moved away slightly but could not avoid the kiss and left in a state of confusion and felt uncomfortable by the incident.
According to Fernandez, days after the incident, Kudabo asked the victim if she wanted another bed bath, and tried to kiss her again.
However, Kudabo’s lawyer, Jerry Sodipe, said the suspect has no previous convictions and has shown remorse for his actions.
Sodipe said Kudabo was “moved to sympathy” due to the pain experienced by the victim and accepted his actions were “inappropriate and unacceptable”.
“He has held up his hands to say, yes he is guilty – he shouldn’t have done that,” Sodipe said.
