The “cabal” narrative that shadowed the Muhammadu Buhari presidency has been given a deeply personal context by his daughter, Fatima Buhari, in the new 600-page biography ‘From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari’.
Launched on Monday, December 15, 2025, at the State House, Abuja, the book by Dr. Charles Omole offers a rare glimpse into why the former President remained tethered to his nephew, Mamman Daura, despite widespread public and internal outcry.
Fatima explained that the foundation of their relationship was not political, but biological and historical.
“Mamman Daura’s father shared the same mother as my father,” she revealed, clarifying that they were effectively brothers in the African sense.
This bond was solidified during Buhari’s three-year detention following the 1985 coup. While his wives and children were denied access, Daura remained the constant link. Fatima recalled her childhood confusion: “I kept asking myself, ‘Why always Mamman between Baba and the family?’”
Fatima’s account suggests that Buhari’s greatest strength – his loyalty – became a governance weakness. She noted that once her father granted trust, he found it nearly impossible to withdraw it without “overwhelming evidence.”
Buhari was not blind to Daura’s actions. Fatima recalled: “Baba will personally tell us that he did this, he did that to him, but he’s still with him.”
Instead of public dismissals, Buhari preferred to “correct quietly” and “warn privately” to avoid public disgrace.
“Before he realises it, that person has committed many atrocities,” she said, noting that while Buhari did confront aides and raise his voice on occasion, he took no pleasure in humiliating people.
Fatima admitted that this hesitation allowed a network to exploit the kinship, often committing “many atrocities” before the President fully realized the extent of the damage.
The book paints a picture of a man who, in his final years, was increasingly guided by empathy and religious devotion.
“He understands the web of relationships — parents, spouses, histories — and he doesn’t want to break hope,” Fatima said.
