The family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has made a heartfelt appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to honour the memory of the late Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, by releasing Kanu.
The family stated that such a gesture would serve as a mark of respect for the late Igbo leader, who passed away in July 2024 and will be buried on November 2.
In a statement released by Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the family also challenged South East governors and other stakeholders to unite and push for Kanu’s freedom, urging them to show leadership.
The family noted that the recent recusal of Justice Binta Nyako from Kanu’s trial opens the door for a political solution, citing the judge’s refusal to comply with Supreme Court orders as an international embarrassment for Nigeria.
Prince Kanu appealed to President Tinubu to apply the same fairness and justice that led to the release of Yoruba self-determination leader Sunday Igboho, stressing that Kanu’s release would help address the marginalization of the Igbo people.
He called for the full implementation of the “Three Rs” — Rehabilitation, Reintegration, and Restoration — to heal the scars of the Nigerian Civil War and ensure justice for the Igbo.
They also called on traditional and religious leaders to create a platform for collective action.
“While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu may have offended some individuals with his rhetoric, it doesn’t indicate he harbours hate.
“He cares for and respects people but expresses concern when things are not handled properly.
“He has no interest in holding political office in Nigeria; his primary focus is on ensuring the proper development of Biafra land with equal opportunities for all,” the family stated.
