The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has enforced its suspension order against the Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, and two other doctors after establishing a prima facie case of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.
The panel’s decision followed a comprehensive review of petitions filed against 21 medical practitioners, alongside their counter-affidavits and sworn oral testimonies. While disciplinary action was taken against some of the doctors, eight others were cleared after deliberations.
The investigation was concluded during the panel’s 25th session held at Excel Hotel & Resort in Abuja on February 17 and 18, 2026.
Background of the Case
The toddler was initially admitted at Atlantis Hospital in Lagos for what was described as a worsening but initially mild illness. Plans were underway to transfer him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States for advanced care. As part of preparations for the emergency evacuation, Atlantis Hospital referred the child to Euracare for pre-flight diagnostic evaluations.
The procedures reportedly carried out included an echocardiogram, a brain MRI, insertion of a peripherally inserted central catheter, a lumbar puncture, and intravenous sedation using propofol. However, the child died following the medical interventions.
His parents subsequently alleged medical negligence and professional misconduct linked to the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a legal notice dated January 10, 2026, issued by a law firm led by Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), the family accused Euracare, its anesthesiologist, and other attending personnel of breaching the duty of care owed to their son.
The notice stated that the child, born on March 25, 2024, was referred to Euracare on January 6, 2026, for diagnostic and preparatory procedures ahead of an emergency medical evacuation to the United States, where a specialist team was reportedly on standby.
According to the allegations, the child developed sudden and severe complications while being moved to the cardiac catheterisation laboratory after undergoing the MRI.
