Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The woman who killed a man who tried to rob her food truck said she fired the gun to save her and her brother’s life.
The shooting occurred at about 1 p.m. Tuesday at the 14500 block of South Main Street near Fondren Road.
ABC13 agreed to withhold the woman’s identity in light of what happened. She is retired from the nutrition program at Houston ISD.
She said she and her brother got to the Elite Eats food truck around 10:30 a.m. to start prepping. By the time of the robbery, they only had two or three customers and only made $40.
Ricky Jimenez, who was identified by the medical examiner’s office, approached the truck.

The woman recalled: “My brother was telling him what we sold, and I was in the corner. When I told him what we sold, the gun went through the window and I panicked.”
She said she was working on something else during her brother’s initial interaction with Jimenez so she didn’t know about his behavior. She saw her brother shut the window of the van they use to serve customers.
“He opened the window again and put the gun through the window,” she recalls.
The woman remembers the man pulling the trigger on the gun, but she jammed. She pulled out a gun of her own and started shooting.
“I’m licensed to carry a gun, too,” she said, “and I never thought I’d have to use one.” “I’ve had this gun for years.”
Jiménez tried to leave the parking lot where the food cart was parked but collapsed a few meters away and died.
“I called 911,” the woman said. “I was screaming and crying and told them to send me a paramedic and an ambulance, because I had just shot someone who tried to rob me.”
The woman said she has cried every day since this happened.
“Both of us could have lost our lives, because I don’t know if God allowed that gun to jam,” she said.
Had she known that the day would end as it did, she would have said she would not have opened the van that day.
“It’s not me,” said the woman, crying. “I’m not that kind of person. I would have given it to him. He could have had that whole truck back then, if that was possible, if that was what he wanted. But he chose to try and kill me and my brother.”
She said that many people offered her support and prayers in the following days. I asked them to give the same support to the Jimenez family.
“I just pray that God gives us guidance and understanding to get through this situation, to get through it from both sides of the family, so that we can get through it from my side of the family, and that God gives his family understanding that I tried to kill me and my brother,” the woman said, crying.
Houston police at the scene called it a “self-defense shooting”. The next day, they said the case would go to a grand jury.
