How Liverpool could line up with bold new formation against Arsenal as Jurgen Klopp navigates possible injury crisis in midfield

Jurgen Klopp has hinted at using the 4-4-2 formation against Arsenal after Liverpool’s success using the new system against Rangers.

The Reds boss abandoned his usual 4-3-3 set-up following last week’s draw with Brighton as he changed up his team for the 2-0 Champions League win on Tuesday.

And the German gaffer revealed in Friday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to the Emirates that he could use the same formation.

Klopp knows Liverpool, who sit in ninth spot, cannot afford to lose in North London as table-toppers Arsenal would lead them by 14 points.

He said: “For us it’s more important we become unpredictable again so we need different systems for that as well. 4-4-2… we can name different systems.

“We have to choose which one is the best for us against next opponent. We have to be more unpredictable.”

The 55-year-old added: “Teams have worked out how to play against us when we’re not at our best.

“Teams figured us out years ago but it still didn’t work [for them] because we were exceptional.

“Whatever system we play, there’s no system in the world with no weakness. It’s about how we perform.”

Liverpool are already facing a midfield crisis with Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out on the sidelines, with Klopp recently confirming Arthur Melo has picked up a muscle injury.

And in another possible blow, the Liverpool Echo have reported that Thiago Alcantara wasn’t pictured in their latest training session.

Though of course the Spain international could have just been missed by the club photographer.

But should he be absent against the Gunners, Fabinho would likely return to the line-up in his place after being benched against Rangers.

Alisson will retain his place between the sticks, with Trent Alexander-Arnold to slot in at right-back and Konstantinos Tsimikas to feature on the opposite side with Andy Robertson not yet match fit.

Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip will likely be the centre-back pairing, with Fabinho playing alongside Jordan Henderson in the middle of the pitch should Thiago be ruled out.

Mohamed Salah could start as the right midfielder with Luis Diaz starting down the left flank, with Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota leading the line.

Jota is yet to score this season, but he boasts an exceptional record against Arsenal having banged in seven goals against them in the last two seasons.
