After serving in the media industry for nearly two decades, Lolani Kalu’s journey took an unexpected turn in December 2017, when he left the station that had shaped his career. How He Was Conned
Shortly after leaving employment, Kalu decided to invest his savings in a retirement home. He engaged a building contractor along Kangundo Road in Machakos County, entrusting the individual with his dream of constructing a modest bungalow where he could settle down after years of service in journalism.
Unfortunately, the trusted contractor turned out to be a fraud. According to Kalu, he paid the man between KSh 1.5 million and KSh 2 million upfront as part of the construction agreement. The contractor, however, vanished soon after receiving the funds — leaving no trace and never starting the project.
“That was the turning point that dented my pockets,” Kalu said in a past interview. “I lost my life savings at a time when I was already struggling with family medical bills. It was painful.”
The scam left him devastated. With no house to show for his investment, Kalu was forced to remain in a rented home, starting over from scratch. The betrayal not only drained his finances but also shook his faith in people he thought he could trust.
