New details on the financial results for James Gunn’s Superman movie have been revealed in a DC Universe report. With the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate, the Man of Steel made his return to the big screen this summer, with David Corenswet starring as Krypton’s last son.
According to Forbes, Superman has made DC Studios more than $100 million in profit, and is “approaching $150 million globally when all is said and done this year.” As the DCU installment grossed $616.5 million at the worldwide box office, $262.4 million was from the international market, while the $354.1 million came from domestic.
The DC reboot for the iconic hero also led to DC Studios having the highest-grossing comic book movie for 2025, surpassing all of Marvel Studios’ releases. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which came out only two weeks after Superman, ended its run with $521.8 million worldwide.
Thunderbolts* grossed $382.4 million worldwide, while Captain America: Brave New World pulled in $415.1 million globally. Superman was the only superhero installment in 2025 to reach $600 million and beyond.
From the many positive Superman movie reviews, Corenswet’s DCU debut is currently sitting with 83% in the Critics’ Score while having 90% in the Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also starred Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The film has also enjoyed great success on HBO Max, as it became available on the streaming service after its theatrical run of 70 days. Gunn’s superhero installment received more than 13 million global views in only 10 days, which Variety reported to be the largest 10-day audience for Warner Bros.’s streaming service since the Barbie film from 2023.
The future of Warner Bros. Discovery is a big topic right now in Hollywood, as the studio is up for sale, with several big names reportedly showing interest in acquiring it. Paramount’s David Ellison would reportedly keep key creative talent if a merger with Warner Bros. happened, including the leadership of Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran.
Following the success of Superman, the Man of Tomorrow movie is moving forward, as Gunn is set to direct the follow-up, which is slated to begin production in 2026. The project, which he wrote the script for, is set to focus on the titular hero and Lex having to join forces against a common threat, with the continuation scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
