How To Train Your Dragon's Mason Thames Hits Three Big Box Office Milestones In One Weekend

Mason Thames has passed three important global box office milestones simultaneously over Halloween weekend. The 18-year-old star had his breakout role in the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, which debuted on June 13.

Thames followed the success of How to Train Your Dragon with two other 2025 movies, namely the October releases Black Phone 2 (Blumhouse’s sequel to their hit Joe Hill adaptation) and Regretting You (an adaptation of the novel of the same name by It Ends with Us author Colleen Hoover).

Per Variety, Halloween weekend was quiet, with the domestic box office posting the lowest-grossing weekend of the year. Regardless, Mason Thames has passed three major milestones in that same 3-day span.

First, Black Phone 2 is set to hit $104 million worldwide by the end of Sunday, becoming only the sixth horror movie of the year to pass the $100 million global milestone, behind 28 Years Later ($151.3 million), Weapons ($267.5 million), Final Destination Bloodlines ($315.2 million), Sinners ($366.7 million), and The Conjuring: Last Rites ($489.8 million).

Second, Regretting You is projected to conclude the weekend by hitting $50 million worldwide. The Colleen Hoover adaptation will become the third romance movie of 2025 to pass the $50 million milestone, behind only Materialists ($105.6 million) and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy ($140.4 million).

When combined with How to Train Your Dragon‘s box office gross of $636 million, Mason Thames movies have thus cumulatively grossed $790 million worldwide in 2025, allowing the actor himself to pass the $775 million global milestone this year. This is more than all but four individual movies (Jurassic World Rebirth, A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Ne Zha 2) have earned in 2025.

Additionally, because movies starring Mason Thames have cumulatively grossed just $952.7 million worldwide over the course of his career, 2025 so far accounts for almost exactly 83% of what his complete filmography has earned at the box office.

Mason Thames previously starred in 2024’s Monster Summer ($1.3 million) and 2022’s The Black Phone ($161.4 million).

Additionally, it is possible that Mason Thames could set a major box office record over Halloween weekend. While it is too close to tell at the time of writing, Sunday morning’s projections are showing that Regretting You could take No. 1 at the domestic box office during its sophomore weekend after debuting at No. 2.

If it does so, Mason Thames will become one of the rare actors to have three No. 1 movies in the same year. While Jim Carrey still holds the record for the most No. 1 debuts in the same year, with 1994’s The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the How to Train Your Dragon star is marking himself as a major up-and-coming talent.
