Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United will both have their 2022/2023 Championship opening weekend fixtures shown live on Sky Sports in a bumper weekend of second-tier action.
Town will have the opportunity to instantly banish their playoff demons when they host Burnley in Sky Sports’ Friday night curtain-raiser on Friday, July 29. Meanwhile, United face a trip down south on Monday night as they take on another relegated side in Watford – they were also knocked out in the playoffs by Forest, this time at the semi-final stage on penalties.
The Terriers were left heartbroken on the Wembley turf in May after Levi Colwill’s own-goal gave Nottingham Forest a 1-0 win and promotion to the Premier League. But Carlos Corberan’s side have the chance to put that behind them straight away after being picked by Sky Sports to kick-off the season with a home game against relegated Burnley. The two sides will meet on the traditional Friday evening opener, with kick-off at 8pm.

The Clarets were sent down on the final day of the season after they lost at home to Newcastle and Leeds United beat Brentford – there has been a lot of change at Turf Moor, with ex-Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany taking charge and a host of key players offloaded. They will, however, be among the favourites to challenge Town for promotion, so an early result either way could be significant.
Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades face an equally tough task in Watford, who came down after just one season back in the top flight. The Hornets have promising ex-Forest Green Rovers boss Rob Edwards in charge at Vicarage Road and will no doubt be looking to go straight back up, with a tough task at hand to keep hold of key players such as Ismaila Sarr and Emmanuel Dennis.
With the Premier League returning in August, the Championship opening weekend will have a host of matches on Sky Sports. Saturday’s evening showing will see Middlesbrough hosting West Brom, while on Sunday newly-promoted Sunderland host Coventry City.
