The Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, has confirmed that he will officially defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) next week, putting to rest weeks of speculation about his political future.
Naijaonpoint reports that Kefas, who currently governs under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said the need for unity and development in Taraba drives his decision to defect.
The governor made the announcement on Tuesday during an expanded stakeholders’ meeting of both the PDP and APC held at the Banquet Hall, TY Danjuma House, Jalingo.
Kefas said, “Yes, a rumour is indeed circulating, and I’m also hearing that rumour.
“Sometimes, when a rumour keeps moving like that, it makes somebody think that it is something good. I am also hearing that rumour, and I am working on it to see that it becomes a reality.”
He added that by next week, he would make an official declaration, noting that his decision was for the unity, peace, and progress of the state.
Kefas further stated, “By the grace of God, in a few days after next week, you will hear from me.
“Let’s forgive one another and think about how we can move this state forward. Once I see unity and cooperation from all of us, I will give you what you deserve.”
Kefas, who described the moment as historic, said the time had come for Taraba to speak with one political voice.
“What I am seeing today is that history is repeating itself, where Taraba will be one. Every one of us here has worked, both in PDP and APC, and my prayer has always been for unity, peace, and progress,” he stated.
He thanked members of the APC for keeping the party strong, saying it was now a viable political platform for his next move.
“I thank members of the APC who have been working very hard to keep this party as an option for us,” the governor added.
APC Leaders Welcome Governor’s Move
The meeting was attended by key APC figures, including Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari; former Taraba Governor, Jolly Nyame; APC North East Vice Chairman, Dr Mustapha Salihu; Deputy National Women Leader, Hajia Zainab Ibrahim; and Taraba APC Chairman, Barr. Ibrahim El-Sudi.
Salihu said Kefas’ planned defection would bring Taraba closer to the federal government, enabling the state to attract more development and resources.
“If the governor’s dream becomes a reality, Taraba will no longer receive peanuts from the federal government,” Salihu said.
Hajia Zainab Ibrahim also described the expected defection as a turning point, saying Taraba would now enjoy the full benefits of being part of the ruling party.
“The state will no longer be an orphan for putting the people’s interests first,” she said.
Taraba APC Chairman, Barrister Ibrahim El-Sudi, hailed the governor’s decision as a long-awaited breakthrough for the state.
He said, “We have been committed to this party for the past 13 years.
“It will be our joy to see Taraba as one, undivided, and without any differences.”
