South African rapper Nasty C has shared the reason behind his decision to quit alcohol after years of heavy drinking.
Naijaonpoint reports that the 28-year-old music star admitted that he had become used to drinking every day, whether at the studio, at shows, or while spending time with friends.
He spoke in an interview with British-Nigerian media personality, Madame Joyce.
According to him, the habit grew into an addiction that kept him constantly surrounded by bottles of vodka, whisky, tequila, rum, and cognac.
Nasty C explained that even though his tolerance for alcohol was high, he came to see it as dangerous since it made it hard to notice when things were going wrong.
What pushed him to finally stop was the fear of looking older than his real age, a concern he said many South Africans associate with excessive drinking.
He pointed out that in South Africa, people often speak about a “phuza face,” a term used to describe the quick aging effect caused by alcohol abuse, where drinkers can appear up to a decade older than they actually are.
For him, avoiding that outcome was enough reason to completely turn away from alcohol.
He said: “I was addicted to alcohol. I was drinking every night. Everytime I go to the studio, restaurant, I drink. Everytime I perform, I drink.
“Also, my tolerance when it comes to alcohol was very high, too. When I drink alcohol with friends, I would be the last one to be intoxicated. And I feel it’s a bad thing because you never know when something is going wrong until it’s too late. I got off the vodka a little bit but I was drinking everything else. Whisky, cognac, tequila, rum I was drinking everything.
“I gave up alcohol because I don’t want to get a ‘phuza face.’ There’s a thing in South Africa we call a ‘phuza face’ when you age really quickly because you drink a lot of alcohol, when you start looking 10 years older than you actually are.”
