Uche chooses Uganda over Nigeria

After more than 13 years in professional football, Uganda forward Ikpeazu, with a Nigerian background, earned his first international cap earlier this year.

The 30-year-old made his national team debut during the September international window, featuring in Uganda’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique.

That appearance ended a long wait for international football after years of club-level experience in England.

Ahead of Uganda’s final Group C showdown against the Super Eagles, Ikpeazu has revealed his strong connection to his Nigerian heritage, admitting that he grew up admiring Nigerian football legends.

Speaking to Soccernet.ng, the former Cardiff City striker named Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha as one of his earliest football inspirations.

“I grew up in the era where everyone watched the Premier League, so I really enjoyed watching Jay-Jay Okocha,” Ikpeazu said.

He also reserved glowing praise for current Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen, describing the Napoli striker as one of the most complete forwards in the game today.

“He was a player I loved watching, and now, obviously, Victor Osimhen is an incredible talent. We don’t need to tell him how good he is anyway.

He’s a special, special striker — a very complete striker. I love and respect him a lot,” the forward added.
