Former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that he never believed President Bola Tinubu had what it takes to lead Nigeria.
“I have never believed that Tinubu is a material to govern the country. I never have,” Amaechi said on Thursday in Abuja.
The former minister was one of the prominent politicians that joined the coalition on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday.
According to him, the woeful performance of the Tinubu administration has caused Nigerians to be nostalgic about the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Amaechi said the economic hardship under President Tinubu’s administration has become so intense that many Nigerians are now yearning for Buhari’s return.
Maintaining that Nigeria has been “completely destroyed”, the ADC chieftain said the country cannot be rescued by a
mere change of government.
“Inflation is at its peak. People cannot eat. People cannot buy food. There is no money to buy food. Everything is gone,” he added.
“Now people want Buhari to come back. What happens in Nigeria is that each new government ends up being worse than the last, and people begin to long for the previous one,” Amaechi emphasised.
The former minister revealed that he withdrew from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) long before he joined the coalition of politicians in the ADC last Wednesday.
Reaffirming his membership of the ADC, Amaechi said he formally left the ruling party last Tuesday night.
“I left APC Tuesday night I never attended one meeting. The last time they invited me, I warned them. In fact, I was surprised I was not expelled. I wrote to them not to invite me again. You cannot be in a club where the majority of people are stealing and you do not say anything,” he stated.
He justified his sustained criticism of the APC led government in which he served as a minster, saying, “it’s not just about changing leadership but about fixing the country.”
He canvassed the formation of a strong movement that would not be concerned only with bringing Nigerians together to take over the government for themselves, but for the people.
Amaechi faulted the handling of the economy by the Tinubu administration, citing the fall in the value of the Naira as one of the administration’s biggest failures.
“The dollar was about 460 or 500 under Buhari. Now it is 1580. That is more than a 100 percent increase,” he noted.
