THE Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has threatened to stir political turmoil in any state where a governor attempts to interfere in the affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State.
Wike made this declaration today at the PDP secretariat in Port Harcourt during the party’s state congress.
“Let me assure everyone, as long as we are alive, no one will take the PDP structure from us. I’ve heard some governors claiming they will take over the structure and return it to someone else. I pity those governors because I will ignite crises in their states,” Wike stated.
“When God has granted you peace, and you reject it—whatever happens next, you’ll have to deal with,” he added.
Wike specifically mentioned Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, warning that any governor who leaves their state to challenge him in Rivers State would face serious consequences.
“I heard they received some money from a signature bonus, and now they think they can interfere in my state. Be prepared because I have the capability to do the same in your state. Whether you’re from Bauchi or any other state, if you try to meddle in Rivers State, you’ll regret it and lose sleep in your own state,” Wike warned.
Wike’s remarks come just days after PDP governors met in Taraba State to discuss the ongoing crisis in the Rivers State PDP, where Wike and the state’s governor, Siminalayi Fubara, are central figures.
In a communique issued by the PDP Governors’ Forum on August 23, Chairman Governor Bala Mohammed expressed support for Governor Fubara and called for a review of the party congress results to restore Fubara’s leadership role in the state.
“The Forum notes the political stalemate in Rivers State, where court rulings have been used to determine the outcome of the party congress. The PDP Governors’ Forum stands by the Governor of Rivers State and will work with the National Working Committee to revisit the congress to correct this anomaly and ensure Governor Siminalayi Fubara takes his rightful leadership position in the party,” the communique stated.
The PDP in Rivers State has been embroiled in a crisis following a fallout between Wike and his successor, Fubara.
Governor Fubara did not attend Saturday’s congress at the party’s secretariat on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
However, the FCT Minister was joined by current and former lawmakers at both federal and state levels, ex-council chairmen, and other party members.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner from INEC and several other commission staff were also present to monitor the proceedings.
