Vice President JD Vance has said he would not describe the US-Iran conflict as a ‘war’ because ‘there is no active shooting’. The remarks come amid reports that the administration could simply declare the conflict over regardless of the status of the Strait of Hormuz or Iran’s nuclear programme as surveys show that a majority of Americans oppose the war.

Vice President JD Vance has denied that the United States is at war with Iran.

The statement came hours after Iran launched missiles at Kuwait in response to the latest round of American strikes on the country. Over the weekend, the United States renewed hostilities with strikes on Iran’s Larak Island.

But Vance said it was not a war because “there is no active shooting”.

“I wouldn’t call it a war. Right now, there is no active shooting. There have been places where this has flared up. Major combat operations lasted for about six weeks, and since we destroyed their nuclear facilities with Midnight Hammer, with Epic Fury, we destroyed their defense industrial base for producing weapons, and also a lot of their conventional military, and then we made it harder for them to rebuild that nuclear program,” said Vance when asked whether the administration would end the war before the midterm elections.

The remarks come amid reports that the administration could simply declare the conflict over, regardless of the status of the Strait of Hormuz or Iran’s nuclear programme, as surveys show that a majority of Americans oppose the war.

According to the polls-of-polls compiled by analyst Nate Silver, 55 per cent of Americans oppose the war with Iran, while just 37 per cent support it.

Vance refuses to set ‘artificial timelines’ for end of war

When asked whether President Donald Trump would end the war before the midterm elections, Vance said he would not set “artificial timelines”.

Even though the United States launched the war without provocation, Vance said responsibility for ending the conflict lay with Iran.

Vance further said, “But when you ask, ‘When will this end?’ You’re asking me a question like, ‘When will the Iranians stop shooting at ships?’ I think the reality is, I don’t know the answer to that question. You would have to ask the Iranians.”

Vance defended the renewed strikes over the weekend, saying that the administration had a “responsibility” to carry out those attacks because Iran continues to target commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
